Facebook Reports Surge In Government Data Requests

(Photo : Reuters) Facebook and Samsung have entered a partnership to release a new update on the Samsung Gear VR.
Facebook has updated its Government Requests page, to show how many requests for information the social network receives from every country.
Government requests for data are nothing new, but Facebook is seeing a large rise in the number of requests to censor a certain topic, especially from growing markets such as India, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Ever since the revelations of the National Security Agency and other government agencies mass collecting information on citizens, Facebook has made the government requests public to be more transparent with its users.
The U.S. government had the most requests for information at 15,433 requests, followed by India. Germany and the UK had the highest numbers in Europe. None of dictatorships showed high numbers when it came to requests for information; however, they likely have other non-transparent ways of gathering data.
Success rates differ from country to country, with the U.S. on a high 80 percent rate, while the UK drops to 70 percent. Facebook handles the requests on a case-by-case basis, in order to find out if the request is worthy of being accepted.
The numbers are still very vague and do not disclose whose information was shown and what the court procedure was like. Facebook cannot reveal this information due to legislation in place, something Twitter is trying to tackle with a lawsuit.
Both Glenn Greenwald and Edward Snowden have warned against using Facebook, claiming the social network is one of the worst for handing information over to the NSA and other government agencies.
It is hard to say if Snowden's 2012 records of the incident still happen inside Facebook - if Facebook are committed to opening up more information - it would seem the company has eradicated most of its ties with the NSA.
