Nexus 5 Users Reporting Battery Issues With Android 5

Nexus 5 owners are reporting heavy battery loss when using WiFi after the recent update to the Android 5 Lollipop Developer Preview.

Google has already acknowledged the issue and fixed it, but this has left a small delay to the launch of Android 5 on Nexus and Google Play Edition devices. The launch is set for Nov. 12 now, pushing it back by a week.

The battery life issue was caused by an "abnormally high number of IRQ wake-up events" according to project member Trevor Johns. Interrupt requests are used on Android for a few functions, and have lead to issues in the past.

On the battery life monitor, Android users were seeing between 1 and 80 percent of their daily usage taken up by "Miscellaneous," which is unusual. The battery issues would take up more than HD YouTube videos, making it impossible for phones to last more than a few hours.

The Nexus 5 has a battery life normally lasting 8 to 12 hours. Google will release a new patch to fix the WiFi issue within the week; bringing the launch to the Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 7 2012 and the Nexus 10.

Most manufacturers have listed their timeline for Android 5 launch, including HTC and Motorola, both updating their flagship phones by the end of the year. Sony, Samsung and LG have all been less descriptive, but should update by mid-2015.

ndroid 5 brings a whole bunch of new changes, including Material Design, an animation focused flat design for mobile, tablet and the Web. Google has added new notifications and ART runtime for faster animation and gaming quality.
