Samsung Galaxy S6 To Feature Dual-Edge Display

Samsung wants to dramatically change the identity of its Galaxy S smartphone, after failing to win over buyers this year with the Galaxy S5.

One new feature the South Korean electronics giant could be preparing is a "dual-edge" display. This has been previewed on the Galaxy Note Edge, where one edge has a curve, offering a place to find settings and app buttons.

This is the first stage of Samsung's testing - the Galaxy Note Edge is on AT&T in the U.S. and is coming to carriers worldwide in the next few months. Even with the high-end price, if Samsung can achieve a few thousand sales, it might be reason enough to try it on their 2015 flagship.

However, the dual-edge display does offer some manufacturing problems. Samsung will need a curved display on both edges, and program the two edges to offer different interfaces for the app.

Samsung has always been a bit slow when it comes to software development. Even though the Galaxy Note Edge has some apps working with the display edge, third parties have been unable to add their own customizations.

Still, Samsung has not made a big step in the mobile market since the Galaxy S3. In order to get back the millions of buyers they lost, the company needs to be ready to compete with the HTC One, Moto X and LG G4 next year, when they're all announced.

And the dual-edge display will not be the only new feature. Reports say Samsung will add a 2K display, Qualcomm 810 or Exynos 7 chip, 3GB of RAM, 128GB of storage with 128GB SD card slot for expansion and a radical new design, with full metal on the back and sides.

If all of this comes true, Samsung's second quarter might look promising, when they normally release the Galaxy S series.
