(Photo : Nokia) Finnish networking firm Nokia is planning a return to the consumer smartphone market.

Nokia is returning to the hardware market with the N1 Android tablet, which has been developed by engineers in Helsinki, Finland.

Microsoft holds the rights to Nokia's brand for 10 years, and although Nokia can't release a mobile phoneuntil 2016, it can produce a tablet.

The tablet will run Android 5.0 with Nokia's Z Launcher. The launcher was developed pre-acquisition by Nokia's software group and will finally be ported to a device.

Z Launcher has quite a few quirks compared to the original version of Android 5.0. The lock-screen will display most used apps and will set certain events - such as sending a text message - to appear every day at that time.

Nokia's N1 tablet has been built with Gorilla Glass 3 and an aluminum shell. The speakers for the N1 are placed on the bottom, alongside the micro USB port. The headphone port is situated on the top of the device, while the volume and on/off buttons are on the sides of the device.

The front will feature a 7.9-inch display, with a 2048 x 1536 resolution. That's the same as the iPad Mini. Nokia has definitely taken a page from the iPad Mini design team when creating the Nokia N1.

Internally, the Nokia N1 will feature a 2.4 GHz Intel Atom processor, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage and an 8 MP camera. No word on the battery size or networks, although it will most likely feature WiFi ac and 4G LTE.

Nokia will start selling the N1 in China for $249, a competitive price against the iPad Mini. There is no word on when or if it will come outside Asia. Nokia did say it will come to other regions in the coming months, but did not say if the U.S. was on the list.
