Cuban Seeks NBA Realignment to Balance East-West Competition

One of the biggest concerns within the NBA in recent years has been the glaring imbalance between the Western and Eastern Conferences. But Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says he has a plan that would even out the competiveness between the two.

The Western Conference has been dominating the NBA for years now. In this season so far, the West is 45-19 against Eastern teams, and is on its way to having a better record than the East for the 15th time in the last 16 seasons.
Because of so much talent and competition in the West, many good teams in the Western Conference are snubbed from being able to make the playoffs, while East teams who have a worse record are able to slip through in the Eastern Conference.
For example, last season the Phoenix Suns and Minnesota Timberwolves finished the season with a good enough record that would have made the playoffs in the East, but the Atlanta Hawks with a worse record were able to advance through.
According to a report by ESPN's Tim MacMahon, Cuban brought up a scenario to realign some of the teams, which could potentially fix the unbalance in the NBA.
The report says that Cuban would send the Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans to the East, and the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks to the West.
"It's not like it'd be the first time we've ever realigned," Cuban said. "It's happened many times before, so there's precedent and I just think it shakes things up and makes things interesting."
Of course there's speculation that Cuban only wants to shift to the East because there's much less competition capable of making a run for a title. But if that were the case, Cuban wouldn't suggest shifting two of the best Western Conference teams in Houston and San Antonio to the East along with him.
Whether or not NBA commissioner Adam Silver decides to implement Cuban's plan to realign teams, it's clear that the organization needs to change something in order to balance out the competition between Western and Eastern conferences.
