Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, Inc. recently unveiled its Mi Air Purifier, an air purifying device that delivers 406 cubic meters of clean air per hour. It also lets users retrieve pollution alerts via their smartphones.

Xiaomi, the world's third largest smartphone maker, said it plans to launch the device in China on Dec. 16 for US$145. Users can pre-order the product beginning today.

The air purifier comes with a dual fan and a four air duct system. It has the ability to filter out 99.99 per cent of PM2.5 air particles. The device also comes with a remote control app.

The app reminds users via their smartphones to replace the filter when needed. The filter costs US$32.

Xiaomi's move comes amid China's growing concerns over high levels of smog. Chinese President Xi Jinping announced last month Chinas's focusing on cleaning up air pollution in cities across the country.

The move is also part of Xiaomi's plan to diversify its product line.

Recently, the Chinese tech giant invested US$40 million, along with other Chinese investors in U.S.-based startup Misfit Wearables Corp.

Misfit Wearables is known for developing activity fitness tracking devices. The Chinese company also announced last month it's investing US$1 billion to improve its internet TV business.
