(Photo : Ubuntu) Meizu will reportedly launch an Ubuntu phone at Mobile World Congress.

Meizu will be adding a third mobile platform to its portfolio at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) on March 1. According to new reports this could Ubuntu Touch.

Canonical's mobile package has been available for over a year now but received little fanfare after the Ubuntu Edge IndieGoGo campaign failed to reach its hefty goal of $32 million.

The Linux-based operator recently announced the first device -- the BQ Aquaris E4.5 -- would run Ubuntu Touch. This put an end to the dry spell Ubuntu was having with its touch operating system but the BQ Aquaris was still just a ported Android device.

Meizu might launch the MX4 or MX4 Pro with Ubuntu Touch, meaning another half-device, which originally started running Android. Still, Meizu has a good pull on the Chinese market, something Canonical will no doubt want to be competing in.

It could be Windows Phone, as well. Microsoft has been on a tear trying to find companies to partner with and Windows 10 looks to be the complete package for app developers.

Windows Phone in China has not made a dent, according to recent reports. It's got less than a one percent market share in the region. Meizu may feel more confident with a newly formed platform, rather than a tried-and-failed option.

Meizu will not be the only Chinese smartphone maker at MWC 2015. Huawei, Lenovo and even Xiaomi might make appearances at the event in Barcelona.
