A new diagnostic test from the diagnostic center Veracyte can be used to avoid the risky and costly lung cancer biopsies, in a world where millions of people who smoke are eligible and are living with the potential risk of being diagnosed with the deadly disease.

In this method, the cell samples are taken from the windpipe of the smokers with the help of the conventional bronchoscopy procedure and the doctors then analyze the reaction of 23 genes, which were exposed to the cigarette toxins.

According to Dr. Avrum Spira from Boston University School of Medicine, these cells act like a canary in a coal mine, and help to determine whether or not the nodule (taken from the throat) is rooted to a cancerous cell deep down the lungs, states Reuters.

In the conventional diagnosis procedure, where a CT scan is done for the affected area in the lungs, there is a chance that the entire procedure will fail 40 percent of the time, according to Locker Dome. Thus the new test has a better success rate compared to the conventional method.

Spira explained that there is only one definitive way to be sure if a person is carrying lung cancer or not, to cut open the chest and look inside of it. Due to this reason, the doctors tend to perform a full- fledged surgery on a patient, instead of simply performing biopsy as they do not want to miss even a single cancerous cell. Many people who undergo this unnecessary surgery are not even carrying this disease. Hence, this new test is the perfect way to asses a patient's chances of being diagnosed with lung cancer correctly.

Veracyte also sells a thyroid cancer test and its lung test costs between $3,000 and $4,000.

All the above mentioned studies are published in the journal "New England Journal of Medicine".
