According to Reuters, the hackers had access to a lot of confidential security clearance information and background details about people coming to America. Federal authorities in United States of America are calling it the biggest cyber-attack of all time. The report points out that the records of more than four million federal officers could have been compromised due to this hack. America is blaming Chinese hackers as the main accused behind the entire episode.
Authorities fear that the discovery of a State sponsorship could further strain the ties between America and China; however, as of now, there is no confirmation in this regard. Additionally, there is still no clarity as to how the American Government would respond to the hackers. On condition of anonymity, a few officials also said that the government had discovered the location of the hackers, which is based somewhere in China. The role of the Chinese government or criminal elements is still being explored.
Access to this data could mean that hackers know about the information of federal employees even after they have retired. It is suspected that the hackers can use this information to decode passwords and access more personal information about these employees. Also, the hacked data has a lot of information about the weapons used by the government, which if it is in the wrong hands could be extremely dangerous. The challenge is though the officials know what kind of data was exposed, there is no clarity about the data that could have been taken by the hackers.
Meanwhile, another report on Boston Globe points out that these hackers could also be responsible for a similar data theft at Anthem and Premera, the country's major health firms.
