The Flash Season 2 Spoiler! Iris West to Play Leadership Role

Warner Music Group Hosts Annual Grammy Celebration - Red Carpet

Iris West is no longer a damsel in distress in "The Flash" Season 2. Barry Allen's love interest is set to take on a leadership role in the series.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Iris (Candice Patton) will get more involved in superhero work in the show.

"Iris slides into [the role] very naturally. She's a born leader. One of the best things in the premiere is Barry decides that he wants to work alone because he doesn't want to risk anyone else's lives, and Iris is really the one who gets the band back together again. She's the only one who can stand up to Barry," Kreisberg explains.

Patton's character was clearly one of the weak points of the show. Iris seemed to struggle finding her own identity more than Barry (Grant Gustin) did. From being The Flash's childhood friend to adapting a Lois Lane persona and eventually losing Eddie, the development of Iris' character is shallow at best.

The season opens with Barry not wanting to be part of the S.T.A.R. labs team. With Cisco and Caitlin unable to convince him, Iris will step into Harrison Wells' shoes as the person who inspires Barry to come back. While Joe is a father-figure for Barry, Iris is someone who can challenge him.

There will be more additions to the cast this season. There's Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale), Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears), and Patty Spivot (Shantel VanSanten)

"The Flash" Season 2 returns on Oct. 6 on CW.
