Tech giant Google announced on Tuesday that it is upgrading the compression capabilities of its Chrome Data Saver feature on the Android platform. The Mountain View-based company claims that the new compression method employed by its browser will reduce data usage by up to 70 percent.

Google announced the update on its official blog posting, "Accessing mobile websites on a slow connection can be frustrating: it can eat up your data, and it takes work to keep track of your usage. With that in mind, we created Data Save mode in Chrome, which reduces the amount of data used when you visit a webpage."
Google was able to achieve its data compression feat by getting rid of most images on a webpage especially when users use a slow internet connection. Once Google Chrome detects that the user is running on a slow internet connection, it will automatically load the webpage without images. This will lead to faster loading speeds and less data consumption.
Users still have the option to load all the pictures and they can tap on the individual photos if they want to fully load it, according to CNet.
Google did not provide specific timeline as to when it plans to roll out the new feature. The company said that it is planning to launch the feature first in Indonesia and India. Some parts of these two countries still rely mostly on the slower 2G Internet connection.
Data compression in a big business in India and some parts of Asia. Norway-based company Opera announced in November that its Opera Max data saving app will be pre-installed in smartphones manufactured by Xiaomi, Acer, Samsung and more.
Google did not say whether it plans to release the update on the iOS platform. The Data Saver feature was introduced to the Android and iOS versions of Chrome in January. In March, Google extended the coverage of the feature and adds desktop and laptop browsers to its supported platform.
