Google Fiber parent company Alphabet announced that it is planning to expand its fast internet service to two key cities in the United States. This is by far the biggest expansion plan for Google Fiber.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Alphabet announced that Google Fiber will expand to Los Angeles and Chicago. In terms of population, Los Angeles is the second largest US city, followed by Chicago, which currently sits in the third spot.

Alphabet said that regulators are currently reviewing their proposal.

Google Fiber director Jill Szuchmacher posted in a blog, "While we can't guarantee that we'll be able to bring Fiber to Chicago and L.A., this is a big step for these cities and their leaders. Expansion planning for a project of this size is a huge undertaking."

Google Fiber's fast Internet service is currently available in 20 US cities. The company is still in the process of expanding its services to other US cities.

The 20 cities where Google Fiber operates accounts for about 5 percent of the total US population. It also includes six of the 10 largest cities in the US in terms of population size.

Since its reorganization and the introduction of Alphabet, Google Fiber has been aggressive in its expansion programs. Analysts said that Google Fiber is one of the most expensive business in Alphabet's lineup since it involves digging up roads in order to bury fiber optic cables.

Alphabet said that it is working closely with city leaders in Chicago and L.A. The company added that the process involves acquiring detailed information of the two cities which will include topography and infrastructure. Once these information are studied, Google Fiber can plan the layout of its fiber optic network in each metro city. The process is long and arduous as it entails acquiring building permits as well as construction requirements.
