World No. 102 China's Qiang Wang upset the American and current World No. 26 Sloane Stephens with a 6-3,6-3 victory to advance to the next level of the 2016 Australian Open at Hisense Arena on Monday.
Wang, 24, eased past Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands (ranked No. 137) 6-2, 6-3 to secure her Australian Open ticket in the qualifying round of the tournament. With her loss, the former semi-finalist Stephens is eliminated from the competition

"She's a good player and I watched her match before so I know her a little bit and I just tried," Wang told reporters."It was my first time at Hisense so I was a little bit nervous."
Wang is one of the three Chinese women who successfully qualified for the prestigious tennis event - along with World No. 132 Shuai Zhang and World No. 139 Yafan Wang.
According to the International Tennis Federation, Wang started tennis at the age of 12. She has won ten singles and one doubles title on the ITF tour in her career. She reached her career high singles ranking of World No. 82 on February 23, 2015, and World No. 616 in the doubles ranking on December 13, 2010.
She plays Right handed (double handed backhand) and is being coached by T. Shimizu.
Stephens, who entered as the 24th seed of the tournament after enjoying a confidence boost from winning her second WTA title at Auckland, committed a handful of unforced errors.
"Today was definitely one of those bad days," the former world No. 11 said. "Nothing was going my way. A lot of shots that I'd like to make, that I normally make weren't going in. A lot of opportunities slipped away."
The hard-hitting American gained a degree of stardom at the 2013 Australian Open after she reached the semifinals by beating Serena Williams and then followed-up by reaching the quarterfinals of Wimbledon that year.
