Football Transfer News: Former Perth Glory Captain Michael Thwaite Sets to Depart for Chinese Side

Former Perth Glory captain Michael Thwaite is on the threshold of a move to the Asian continent and could join iother high profile international football players shifting to the East.

According to SBS, the former Australian defender has agreed terms with Liaoning Whowin, a Chinese Super League side based in Panjin, Liaoning Province.

32-year-old Thwaite's contract is still valid until May this year. Peter Filopoulos, the chief executive officer of the club confirmed over the weekend that the ex-skipper has a release clause, which has now been activated. 

"There are some conversations and some correspondence with a couple of Chinese clubs through various agents, but we haven't finalized anything as yet," the chief executive said.

"I'm sure over the course of this week there will be some developments on that front. Michael's got some ambitions and we've known that for several months.

"He did have an agreement with the club that if something did come his way during the course of his remaining contract which ends in May that we wouldn't stand in his way."

Thwaite began his football career at Sydney University in the New South Wales Winter Super League.  In 2002, he played for the Marconi stallions, an Australian semi-professional football club that is a member of National Premier Leagues NSW 2.  He spent two seasons with the Stallions.

Following his spell with the Stallions, he signed to a Polish professional football club Wisla Krakow on a Bosman transfer from the Romanian football club National Bucharest.

In 2008, the Australian football player signed for the SK Brann, a Norwegian football club. Thwaite was loaned to the Melbourne Victory of the A-League, Australia's primary competition for the sport of football.

Thwaite was part of the Australian under-20s squad in the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship that was held in the United Arab Emirates. He was also a team member of the Australian national team that qualified for the 2014 World Cup.
