Shanghai SIPG (Shanghai International Port Group) is a professional Chinese club that competes in the country's top tier of professional football. The club concluded the CSL last season in second place after champions Guangzhou Evergrande.
Recently, Shanghai received the approval of the Taobao to acquire the services of their top scorer - Brazilian striker Elkeson - in a mega-deal. The well heeled Chinese outfit is currently being managed by the veteran Swedish football manager Sven Goran Eriksson.
"For the purpose of supporting Chinese teams to compete in the AFC Champions league, and for the national glory, we agreed Elkeson's transfer to Shanghai SIPG club," the five-time CSL champion outfit said in the announcement.
According to Touchline Talk, Shanghai SIPG have great aspirations of perhaps going one better this season and winning their first ever CSL title and they see a defensive midfielder as key to that, with Obi Mikel appearing to be their top target.
The 22 -year-old Nigerian Mikel played for the Lyn Oslo, a Norwegian club from 2004 to 2006 before moving in with the Premier League club Chelsea.
Mikel was part of the Nigeria Under-20 national team that competed in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship that was held in the Netherlands wherein they finished runner-up to Argentina.
With just over a week of the window left, Chinese Outfits are still getting very involved in enticing high profile international players in different leagues in the world to make a move and shift their football career to China.
