Apple has launched a replacement program to replace faulty USB-C cables that were shipped to customers along with the 12-inch Retina MacBook. The original USB-C cables are defective and can cause the MacBook not to charge or charge unreliably.

In a note acquired by 9to5Mac, Apple explained the situation saying, "A limited number of Apple USB-C charge cables included with MacBook computers may fail due to a design issue."

The replacement USB-C cables are completely identical to the original ones that were shipped with the MacBook, aside from some few iterations that were made in order to resolve the design issue.

Users can tell if any USB-C charger is affected as the defective cable lacks a serial number that is imprinted right next to the "Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China" text. The replacement USB-C cables have a serial number branded right after the text previously mentioned.

This month, Apple will send out a new cable to all customers who completed their product registration process or purchased their MacBook on the Apple Online Store.

Apple will also send out replacement cables within the next few weeks to MacBook owners who purchased standalone USB-C charging cables. Customers who think they are eligible for a replacement but did not receive the replacement cables are advised to contact Apple Support or visit the Genius Bar located at an Apple retail store.

Apple released the Retina MacBook in April 2015. The defective cables were sold approximately two months before Apple could release the redesigned version of the USB-C cables.

Apple is expected to continue to replace defective USB-C charge cables until June 8, 2018.
