DigiCell, the wireless division of Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), is collaborating with China's Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. to install a new 4G LTE mobile network service throughout Belize in Dec. 2016.

BTL's move will make it the first and only telecommunications company in the country and the region to provide such high speed mobile connectivity.

Chairman of BTL Executive Committee Anwar Barrow  said, "BTL has made the very conscious decision to install LTE throughout the entire country wherever we have current mobile coverage - and not simply do a partial installation in select places."

"It is an important differentiator between us and our competitor, as we believe that it is critical that as many Belizeans as possible have access to this cutting edge high speed mobile technology," he added.

Barrow noted that Huawei "will bring significant experience and expertise to the project" and will be responsible for making sure the service performs, according to plan. Established in 1972, BTL is the top telecommunications provider in the nation, with the most cellular and Internet subscribers.

Meanwhile, Vodafone India has announced that Huawei will be deploying a new 4G LTE network in India, which will provide services in the cities of Mumbai, Delhi-NCR region, Kerala and Karnataka. In China, Huawei and China Unicom have successfully installed a 4G cloud radio access network (C-RAN).

During the opening day of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016 event in Barcelona, Spain, Huawei and Deutsche Telekom unveiled the world's first 5G E2E network slicing demo based on Huawei's architecture.
