The first official trailer for 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' has been released, featuring Felicity Jones in the lead role as Jyn Erso. The teaser also featured the first look at the Rebel Alliance in action as well as new characters and villains.

The first official trailer for the upcoming 'Star Wars' spinoff film was revealed on ABC's 'Good Morning America.' It featured Felicity Jones as the lead protagonist Jyn Erso, a mysterious human female soldier who fought for the Alliance to restore the Republic.

The trailer offered a first look at Gareth Edwards' new film focused on rebels on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. It is reportedly set before the events of the original 1977 release 'Star Wars: Episode VI - A New Hope'..= It is also intended as the first film in a planned anthology of standalone films in the Lucasfilm-Disney franchise.

At the present, not much is known about Jones' Jyn Erso. The trailer hinted that Jyn had a history of smuggling thereby making her a great asset for the Rebels in their mission to steal from the Galactic Empire. It was also revealed that she was forced to survive on her own at a young age and has a rebellious, careless and undisciplined streak.

Although Jones' character remains enigmatic, it is clear that Jyn Erso would cement her place in the 'Star Wars' lineup of strong female protagonists.

According to Wired, Jones joins a diverse cast that includes Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Rikz Ahmed and Alan Tudyk.

The 32-year old English actress is best known for her role as Jane Hawking in 'The Theory of Everything,' where she garnered a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She also made notable appearances in films such as 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2,' 'The Invisible Woman' and 'Like Crazy.'

'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' is an upcoming spin-off film from the 'Star Wars' franchise. It is directed by Gareth Edwards and penned for the big screen by Chris Weitz. It is scheduled to be released on December 16, 2016.
