The new Leica dual-camera technology of the recently-launched Huawei P9 smartphone is reportedly made in cooperation with Sunny Optical Technology Co., Ltd., which is a leading Chinese manufacturer of optical components and instruments.
Sunny Optical Technology is in the business of manufacturing optical lenses for mobile devices, cell phone camera modules, automotive lenses and optical imaging systems, among many other related products. According to the company, it has expanded its market into forty countries so far, and has managed to become "the most important supplier to many Tier 1 customers domestically and internationally".

According to GSM Arena, this marks the first time Leica has worked with a Chinese OEM, which could also mean that the German company is planning to establish a stronger foothold in the current smartphone camera industry.
Specifications-wise, the dual-camera setup of the P9 and P9 Plus consists of two large 12 megapixel sensors, in which one unit (RGB sensor) is used to capture images with colors while the other unit (Monochrome sensor) is used to capture black and white images only.
The monochrome sensor lacks a "bayer filter" which means that the sensor is able to capture up to three times more light, making it more suitable for low-light conditions. Additionally, the P9 features three special color shooting modes designed by Leica, and they are the Standard mode, Vivid Colors and Smooth Color mode.
For those who didn't know, the dual-camera technology is a result of a long-term partnership and collaboration between Leica and Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. The partnership aims to harmonize Leica's legendary expertise in photography with Huawei's innovative technology.
Earlier this year, Huawei's Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Business Group said, "We choose our partners carefully, and with this extraordinary collaboration we are offering our wide customer base and consumers the best elements of two expert brands in harmony: combining innovation and design, enhancing the user experience and continuing to inspire amazing advancement in human technology through exceptional premium imaging quality."
"Leica is a legend in the world of photography; we believe no other manufacturer has revolutionized the industry as much as them. We, HUAWEI, take the utmost pride in exceptional quality and Leica is in a class of its own in its sector." Mr. Xu added.
