Market research company NPD Group has released a report revealing video games sales figure for the month of April. According to the report, 'Dark Souls 3' was the best-selling game in North America.

According to IGN, more than three million copies of 'Dark Soul 3' has been sold since it was launched in March.

The report revealed that customers spent more than $509 million on new game products last month. Compared to figures from 2015 during the same time of the year, sales dropped by about 15 percent from $598 million.

Unlike in March, April saw a huge decline not only in software sales but also in hardware.

The NPD Group report revealed that only accessories such as Nintendo's Amiibo and the recently defunct Disney Infinity product saw an increase in sales.

According to NPD Group, customers spent $142.1 million on hardware purchases, $203.9 million on software, and $157.6 million on accessories. Hardware and software sales dropped by 23 and 21 percent, respectively. On the other hand, accessories sales went up by four percent.

Some market analysts have noted that major video game titles released in April such as 'Ratchet & Clank' did not do nearly as well as games released during the same period in 2015.

In a statement, NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan said, "New physical software declined in April 2016 due to a few factors: poor comparisons to last year's new releases, and the poor performance of March launches in April compared to last year."

In the software side of the report, 'Dark Souls 3' took the top spot, followed by 'Ratchet & Clank' and 'MLB 16: The Show' in the second and third spot, respectively.

The NPD Group did not release the sales figure for hardware sales. However, some market analysts agree that there is indeed a drop in demand for the latest consoles, which is why hardware manufacturers like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft are all working on a possible upgrade for their current console systems.
