The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is considered as the biggest stage for video game companies to unveil new products and make major announcements. This year's E3 is no different as Sony officially announced that the highly anticipated virtual reality headset PlayStation VR will hit the market on Oct. 13 and will have a price tag of $399.

While virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive were released earlier this year, Sony took its time with the PlayStation VR. The company said that the decision to release the PlayStation VR at a later date was taken in order to give game developers ample time to develop and create content for the device.

Sony Interactive Entertainment worldwide studios chairman Shaw Layden made the announcement during Sony's press conference at the E3 2016 in Los Angeles. Layden added that more than 50 games will be coming to the PlayStation VR and will become available within months of the release of the virtual reality headset.

Resident Evil, Batman: Arkham, and Star Wars are among the confirmed titles headed to the PlayStation VR.

Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad said, "Virtual reality is expanding the video game space and entertainment overall, so it is extremely exciting to have our incredible team at Rocksteady Studios dive into this new storytelling medium with the Batman Arkham franchise."

Unlike the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which require a high-end PC in order to render an immersive virtual reality experience, the PlayStation VR will work with existing PlayStation 4 consoles. Many tech analysts agree that this feature alone is enough for gamers to delve into the world of virtual reality since it does not require them to shell out hundreds of dollars to build a high-end PC.
