"Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn" director says Square Enix is in talks with Microsoft to bring the video game along with its "Heavensward" expansion to the Xbox One console.

"A Realm Reborn" made its debut on PlayStation 3 in 2013, followed by a next-gen release on the PlayStation 4 in April 2014, but the game is yet to be released on an Xbox console.

Square Enix has previously cited Microsoft's console infrastructure and its inability to support cross-platform play as the main reason why "A Realm Reborn" has never made it to Xbox platforms, which essentially means Xbox consoles do not allow players from other platforms to play on the same servers.

One of the key highlights of Microsoft's press conference at E3 2016 was giving players the freedom to enjoy a host of games on both Xbox One and Windows and since "A Realm Reborn" is already available on Windows, many gamers were left questioning whether the multiplayer role-playing game will be coming to Xbox.

"Final Fantasy XIV" director Naoki Yoshida has now confirmed that Square Enix is currently in negotiations with Microsoft over a possible Xbox One release for "A Realm Reborn."

"Microsoft actually approached the 'Final Fantasy XIV' team about the cross-platform opportunity," Yoshida told Polygon. "When our team reviewed the regulations that are associated with that, we realized that Microsoft may not have the experience or understanding of running an MMORPG as an online game genre just yet. The 'Final Fantasy 14' team has fed back to Microsoft that there are certain elements of its regulations that we would have to consider waived. We're waiting on Microsoft's response for that, but we are having discussions."
