The new upgrade was undertaken by the subway system operator along with China Mobile Beijing and China Unicom Beijing. It would ensure that all subway commuters will have access to ultra-fast Internet connection even though they are in transit. It is known around the world that subway systems, due to its underground location, is hard for cellular signals to penetrate.
The new upgrade means that all of Beijing's underground mass transport system will have complete 4G access. China Mobile Beijing and China Unicom will be tasked with maintaining the 4G services on Beijing's subway system, and this includes the second phase of Line 6 and Line 7, the west part of Line 15, the second phase of Line 8, and the Airport Express.
The contract between Beijing Subway Information Development and the two communications companies will cover at least 83 new stations. The financial details of the said agreement were not disclosed.
Beijing Subway Information Development started implementing 4G Internet infrastructure on its subway system back in 2014. The first to receive such upgrades were Line 9 and Line 4 back in May 2014. The two subway lines are serviced by China Mobile.
The middle suction of Line 14 and the second phase of Changping Line launched its 4G trial operation in December 2015, according to China Tech News.
In similar news, China is currently pushing towards the rapid adoption of the 5G network in the country, according to Shanghai Daily. That being said, developers of the Beijing subway system have made sure that there is enough room for the 5G upgrade once the technology is fully implemented in the country.
