Two Chinese banks have revealed that they were targeted by online fraudsters in a phishing scheme. The Hang Seng Bank and Bank of China Hong Kong both issued notices about recent web-based attacks on their respective customers based in China.
On Aug. 23, Hang Seng Bank alerted its customers about a fraudulent website that uses a domain name that is almost identical to the one used by the bank. Investigations into the attack found out that the domain was registered on Aug. 20. At the moment, the fraudulent domain has been taken down.

In a separate incident, the Bank of China Hong Kong issued a notice to its customers warning of a possible phishing attack. The Bank of China Hong Kon issued the notice of Aug. 16 stating that fraudsters could be using a fake website that looks exactly like the legitimate one that they are using. Just like the Hang Seng Bank attack, the Bank of China Hong Kong said that fraudsters are using online phishing schemes to illegally acquire sensitive user information.
The Bank of China Hong Kong is yet to confirm how many of its users' accounts were compromised. According to China Tech News, both the Bank of China Hong Kong and Hang Seng Bank have reported the hacking incident to the authorities for formal investigations.
