The HTC Nexus 9 is also a device said to run Android 5.0 L and could be released on the third quarter of the year. Based on the 18-month software support rule, the LG Nexus 5 and ASUS Nexus 7 2013 will receive the Android 5.0 L update.

The LG Nexus 4, ASUS Nexus 7 2012 and Samsung Nexus 10 ended their life cycles in May 2014, January 2014 and May 2014, respectively.

Other Nexus handsets such as the Galaxy Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus were removed from the Android 4.4 KitKat support and aren't expected to receive the Android L update. Users, however, may upgrade using customized ROMs if third-party developers will release a version.

Android One devices will also run Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box with exclusive software upgrades to Google's new releases. These devices will have new software support for the next two years.

Android One devices with Android 5.0 L will have a new default runtime called Android Runtime added to Dalvik runtime; new UI called Material Design for multiple services and apps; improvements on syncing with non-handheld devices and notifications and efficiency on energy use through Project Volta.

Google Play Edition devices get new firmware versions directly instead of via network carriers. Google Play Edition devices that will get the Android 5.0 L update based on the 18-month support rule are the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One M7, Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Moto G, HTC One M8 and LG G Pad 8.3.
