The latest Apple and Microsoft quarterly reports show that iPad sales were dropping and Surface Pro 3 tablet sales were on the rise.

The iPad improvements were minor, the upgrade cycle too long and more innovative while cheaper tablets were out in the market. Surface Pro 3 was positioned as a hybrid device, a crossover between tablets and Windows PCs.

The new iPad Air 2 comes during Apple's dwindling tablet sales. The new device has new features such as a high-definition display and TouchID fingerprint scan.

It comes with a 9.7-inch touch screen display with 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution and 264 ppi pixel density. Meanwhile, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 has a 12-inch display with 2160 x 1440 pixels resolution and 216 ppi.

It has an Intel Core i3 chip and 4 GB of RAM which is ideal for basic computing functions for office tasks and the Surface Pro 3 i5 and i5 models for bigger tasks. On the other hand, the iPad Air 2 comes with the A8X chip from Apple which also comes in the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The Surface Pen also helps get a lot of tasks done by allowing users to drag and select or write and draw on the screen. It can also be a computer mouse for quick right and left click actions.

The iPad Air 2 does not have this. The Apple iPad Air 2 comes with huge internal storage capacities such as the 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB variants. Surface Pro 3 has a microSD card and USB 3.0 port for external storage support.
