Sony Preparing Xperia Z4 For Electronics Show In January

Sony surprised the tech community recently by releasing a custom Android N developer preview.

Sony has pre-emptively announced it will attend next year's Consumer Electronics Show, inviting members of the press to attend the conference in two months. It might be a little early for most to start thinking about CES 2015, but Sony wants to get it out of the way.

The Consumer Electronics Show is the largest multi-corporation technology event of the year. It normally plays host to all manner of new technologies, including mobiles, tablets, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, TV and anything else with an electronic pulse.

Last year, Sony announced the Xperia Z1 Compact, several 4K display, PlayStation Now, a refresh to the VAIO line and various cameras, some supporting 4K video. This year will hopefully be more of the same.

The main piece of the event should be the Xperia Z4. Sony is focusing on six-month updates to its flagship smartphone - even though this has not worked out in the past year - as Sony smartphone sales continuing to hurt the Japanese company's profits.

This will most likely come with the Xperia Z4 Compact, Sony's smaller flagship phone. Considering the changes to phone sizes in the past year, Sony might look to add a 5.5-inch display to the Xperia Z4, and a 4.7-inch display to the Xperia Z4 Compact.

Sony also needs to revamp its TV business, after another year of losses. The 4K TVs have not caught on with the general audience in the U.S. or Europe - not a large surprise considering most 4K TVs still cost more than $10,000.

One of the markets Sony is doing well in, video games, might crop up in the conference. PlayStation Now was unveiled a year ago at CES, but is still in beta and Sony has messed up quite badly when it comes to business model, leading most people away from the service.
