Users needs computer, ODIN flash tool and ChainFire's rooting tool kit to root their phones. They should back up all their data before performing the root method tutorial to avoid losing files and settings. Once the data is lost, it cannot be recovered so users are advised to back up downloads, pictures and contacts. Rooting allows users to install root apps on their phones.
Battery level should be at least 50 percent and USB debugging mode must be enabled. The user should download and install necessary USB drivers for the Galaxy S4 on the computer, download the Auto-Root tool of ChainFire for Android 4.4.2 KitKat and ODIN flash tool to the computer.
To gain root access, the user must extract the ODIN flash tool executable file and ChainFire Auto-Root. The Galaxy S4 must be turned off and rebooted into Download Mode. Press the volume down and power keys and hold it until the Android logo appears. The user must then launch the ODIN flash tool and connect the device through a USB cable to check if the ID:COM on the ODIN flash tool will turn yellow. If not, USB drivers must be installed.
The user must click on PDA and select file "CF-Auto-Root-ja3g-ja3gxx-gti9500.zip" on the ODIN flash tool. He must check the F.RESET TIME and AUTO REBOOT on the ODIN flash tool and press START to start the installation process. While rooting, the device will reboot into Recovery Mode automatically to install necessary files that will turn the ID:COM into green. Once installation completes, the device will reboot and take about five minutes to load the home screen. By then the device may be disconnected from the computer. To check the root access status, the user may download the Root Checker app from the Google Play Store.
