Tech company Mozilla announced on Tuesday that is will halt the development of the Firefox OS and will leave it in its current version. Mozilla is pulling the plug to one of its most ambitious projects, a browser-based operating system for smartphones.

In an emailed statement sent the Computer World, Mozilla chief legal and business officer Denelle Dixon-Thayer said, "Firefox OS proved the flexibility of the Web, scaling from low-end smartphones all the way up to HD TVs. However, we weren't able to offer the best user experience possible and so we will stop offering Firefox OS smartphones through carrier channels."

Despite pulling the plug on Firefox OS, Dixon-Thayer said that Mozilla will continue its efforts of experimenting and developing new platforms across connected devices.

Tech analysts were not surprised by the decision of Mozilla to stop the development of Firefox OS. One factor cited by some analysts is the growing command of iOS and Android on the mobile operating system market.

The mobile market is currently dominated by two brands, Apple iOS and Google Android with Microsoft Windows coming in a distant third place. Firefox OS will have to claw its way into this seemingly crowded environment in order to establish its presence and somehow gain attention from users.

Additionally, Firefox OS was not able to grab the attention of major tech players. While Apple, Google and Microsoft rely on their own resources to develop their respective platform, many analysts believe that Mozilla does not have the resources to do the same.

During the early days of Firefox OS, tech experts were hopeful that Mozilla could recreate the revolutionary success it amassed when it first released the Firefox desktop browser back in 2002.

The original plan for Firefox OS was to move away from the traditional app store model and instead create an optimized platform for HTML5, the latest specification of the Internet's core programming language, according to Network World.
