Chinese tech giant Tencent has completed its purchase of Riot Games, developer of the highly popular "League of Legends." Tencent acquired majority of Riot Games in a stakeout in February 2011, while the latest purchase acquired the remaining equity of the game developer.
Many tech analysts believe that the full acquisition will have a significant effect on how employers are compensated as part of the company's equity incentive program.

In a statement released by Riot Games, the game developer said, "This allows us to move away from a Riot equity program towards a cash-based incentive program that allows Rioters to share in Riot's success. This program comes in addition to our highly competitive salaries, open PTO, learning and development programs, 401K match, subsidized medical plans, and kitchens stocked with snax."
On the other hand, Tencent have been aggressive in investing to game developers especially Western ones. The Chinese tech giant owns 40 percent of Epic Games, developer of popular video game titles such as "Gears of War" and "Unreal" franchises. Tencent is also a major investor in Activision Blizzard, in fact the company is planning to release an online-only version of "Call of Duty" in China.
On the mobile platform, Tencent owns Glu Mobile, developer of celebrity-focused mobile video games like "Katy Perry Pop." Aside from investments in the video game industry, Tencent also owns and runs several successful mobile apps. Among these are popular online messaging applications Wechat and QQ. A recently released report shows that almost half of Tencent's revenue came from online games.
"League of Legends" was released way back in 2009 and since then the game has surged to popularity. The game is currently one of the biggest online game in the world boasting at least 67 million active players per month. Riot Games, which is composed of 18 studios across several continents, recently announced its plan to overhaul the game.
