Samsung unveiled a number of improvements to its Gear S smartwatch to lure shoppers for the upcoming holidays.

The latest smartwatch from Samsung can be used without using a smartphone. It wraps around the contours of the wrist instead of having a traditional flat rear surface.

Samsung Gear S features a curved Super amoled display with 2-inch diagonal measurement and 360 x 480 resolution. It has a built-in 3G modem that allows users to receive notifications and messages from social networks, calendar and other apps.

The smartwatch will also allow users to make and receive phone calls. It's not yet clear how it will work since it doesn't have a phone number.

It offers turn-by-turn walking directions via mapping data from Nokia's Here service.

GPS sensors, an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, UV detection, barometer and a heart rate monitor are also included in Gear S.

Gear S will run Samsung-owned Tizen OS, which is also present is Samsung Gear 2 and Gear Neo devices.

It will have 4 GB of internal storage and 512 of RAM. Its processor is a dual-core 1.0 GHz processor.

Gear S has IP67 dust and water resistance along with 300mAh battery, which will work for two days under normal conditions.

The latest smartwatch from the giant South Korean electronics company is the fourth major smartwatch to launch this year.

The company has not yet released the price tag for Gear S.
