Chinese tech company ZTE is hoping to go big in the Big Video era as it launches the high-end Axon 7 smartphone alongside a new virtual reality headset - called VR ZTE - in Beijing. Like the Huawei VR and Samsung Gear VR, ZTE's new VR headset is said to rely on smartphones as well.

The Axon 7 is a new member to the Axon line-up and a successor to last year's models. It measures 151.8 x 75 x 8.7 mm in dimensions and weighs about 185 grams. Specs-wise, the device features a 5.5-inch AMOLED display screen with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels (QHD). The screen is covered by a 2.5D glass and protected by a Gorilla Glass 4.

In terms of the camera, the device has a 20 megapixel rear-facing unit along with f/1.8 snapper and Samsung's Isocell sensor and sapphire lens. The primary unit is said to be capable of capturing 4K videos at 30 frames per second (fps). On the front, the device features an 8 megapixel shooter with dual-LED flash.

Under the hood, the Axon 7 is equipped with Qualcomm's powerful Snapdragon 820 chipset, an Adreno 530 GPU, 4GB or 6GB of RAM, and 64GB or 128GB of built-in memory storage. The 64GB and 128GB versions are also expandable via microSD card. Finally, the device is powered by a 3,140 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0. Other specs include dedicated AKM 4961 + 4490 audio chips for high audio quality, a rear-facing fingerprint sensor and support for USB Type-C port connector.

As for the ZTE VR, the headset is said to feature a 96-degree field of view (FOV) like that of Samsung's Gear VR, and includes a proximity sensor and a high-precision 9-axis gyroscope. The ZTE VR is said to perform better than the current VRs out there in the market as it is capable of reducing latency to around 16.7 milliseconds, as compared to the Huawei VR's 18 milliseconds latency.

Meanwhile, the ZTE Axon 7 and ZTE VR are now available for pre-orders in China and will be available for the international market sometime in June.
