Shanghai has opened a new Disney-themed subway station to cater to Chinese Metro commuters awaiting a glimpse of Disneytown at the still unopened Shanghai Disney Resort.

According to the Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, an estimated 8,000 metro commuters took the train to the station on Tuesday despite the drizzling weather. Passengers were welcomed on the magical-looking train station, designed with a blend of both Disney classic and Chinese elements.

"Two three-meter tall Mickey and Minnie mouse sculptures stand at the center of the station hall. We incorporated elements of traditional Chinese paper cutting into the two sculptures," Ma Lingying, the station's interior designer said.

The station, which is situated at the far end of Line 11, spans a massive 40,000 square meter area, which is four- to fivefold bigger than a conventional station. It is also the only station serving Shanghai Disneyland, the Metro said.

The Disney-themed station is merely a 10-minute walk from the theme park. Officials warned that tough security measures will be implemented, requiring all passengers and baggage to be scanned before boarding.

Meanwhile, Disneytown personnel gave a warm welcome to its first few visitors by providing assistance and even taking photos for them.

"I am extremely impressed by the staffers at the resort," a 76-year-old visitor told Shanghai Daily. "They greet every tourist warmly with big smiles."

Since shops and restaurants are still to open, some visitors were left disappointed as the business district's general emptiness.

"Everything was closed, and some places were still under construction," a visitor surnamed Wu said. "It's boring and disappointing. But my granddaughter likes the place."
