Newly acquired Houston Rockets starting point guard Ty Lawson said he's the missing piece for his team to reach the NBA Finals. Lawson said that before he was traded by the Denver Nuggets, he got a chat with Rockets star James Harden and told the latter to get him "over there" as he'll be "that piece to get over the hump."

The Miami Heat signed undrafted rookies forward Greg Whittington of Georgetown and shooting guard Corey Hawkins of Cal-Davis to non-guaranteed contracts. The 6-8 Whittington impressed the team in Summer League with averages of 9.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1.4 steals, 1.3 blocks and 24.5 minutes per game.

Five Rutgers football players have been suspended after being charged criminally, according to athletic director Julie Hermann. One of the players was charged in two home invasions and four others were charged with assaulting a group of people in April, reports ESPN.
