Medialog Corporation, an LG Uplus affiliate, had already begun selling Huawei's 5 inch X3 smartphone model, a version of the company's Honor 6 as it's known in the international market.

The X3 smartphone runs on the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. It packs a Kirin 920 octa core processor along with 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of built-in memory storage.

The price and shipment of the phone hasn't yet been confirmed, but is expected to come in below US$499 (KRW500,000).

Reports claim Samsung Electronics Group, the world's largest smartphone maker, has been losing market share to Chinese tech companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi, Inc. Both companies are known for developing cheap smartphones.

Xiaomi recently dethroned Huawei as the third largest smartphone maker in the world.

Recently, Huawei announced plans to work with LG Uplus and two other South Korean telecom companies, SK Telecom Co. Ltd. and KT Corporation, to establish fifth generation (5G) networks.

Huawei has yet to decide if it will open a new research and development facility in South Korea.
