The hit Korean Drama 'Descendants of the Sun' will be aired by local Chinese channel Viu TV for free.

On Tuesday, the show's main actors visited Hong Kong to promote the show. The romantic-drama story revolves around the characters played by Song Joong-ki, a captain soldier, and Song Hye-kyo, a doctor assigned to a country called Uruk. In the plot, the lovers are caught between a fictional warfare and their jobs.

According to a survey conducted by Nielson Korea, overall 30 percent of the drama's audience came from China. Furthermore, 34.4 percent viewed the latest episode, which eventually increased to 40.9 percent in South Korea.

The 'Descendants of the Sun' has proven its success as iQiyi.com purchased exclusive rights to air the drama in China for $250,000 each episode, which is about 40 percent of the production cost. It has reportedly reached more than two billion views on the video-streaming site.

"First of all, the story is very beautiful," he general manager of iQiyi Zhang Yuxin said. "And it is simultaneously aired in both South Korea and China so as to protect the interests of both its Korean producer and iQiyi."

The People's Liberation Army Daily, a Chinese military newspaper, noted that the drama is a "good example for military-themed dramas and movies."

Meanwhile, because of the support given by the Chinese companies, the show's production cost of $11 million has reportedly been paid off.

On the other hand, the drama's creators has confirmed that a Chinese remake will be made soon.

Chinese fans have started an online poll to decide who will be playing the lead characters. Actor, Hu Ge received the highest votes of 1735 to play Song Joong Ki's character, while Gao Yuanyuan had 1758 votes for the role of Song Hye Kyo.

Although fans are excited to see a Chinese version of the romantic drama, many continue to anticipate the upcoming episodes of the 'Descendants of the Sun.'
